Please forgive the lack of posting. Poor blogs suffer now that our time is squished between one social media and another.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Let me show you a little project I've been working on. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I started a 365 day project back in January, and I was quite good about doing it. Things kind of got crazy and I haven't kept it up quite as well as I would have liked, but I still thought that some fun and ok drawings came out of that burst of activity. So here is a collection of about 22 I think? I hope you like it, the book is available in the link on the side. Cheers all !!rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04008467590441962115noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30863424.post-70411097494060128052015-12-14T12:11:00.001+11:002015-12-14T12:25:08.465+11:00End of year wrap up.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

But, I have to tell you about the <a href="https://rachel-hine.squarespace.com/support-studio-practice/tapestry-for-beginners-a-tapestry-primer" target="_blank">book</a> I've put together about the fundemantals of tapestry construction and the little update in the web shop.<br />
<br />
In the future I intend to post more in the website blog, apparently it's better for searches and so on. Especially that's where all the meaty pictures are!<br />
<br />
So, I'll be listing a few experimental pieces in the web shop. I'm also working on a little zine that eventually will be finished, you'll be able to get that from there aswell.<br />
<br />
A little note about the book/course notes...there was a teeny mistake in the contents page numbering, and I apologise to you who have this first run...It's been noted and future copies will be all perfect in that regard.<br />
Plus, a huge thank you to the weaving army on intagram! you all rock! Also, please contact me if you need any clarification on any of the things that are hard to adapt to your looms etc. I'm available.<br />

<br />
I want to talk about the phenomenon of the "workshop" next....any interest?rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04008467590441962115noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30863424.post-8662264101687136172015-01-16T15:22:00.004+11:002015-04-08T09:20:49.349+10:00Welcome 2015Fairly regularly I think I'm going to stick to some new regime or idea, like this one. 2015, I'm going to try to write proper blog posts about subjects that get in my brain a bit. Ideas I usually bore my friends and family with...Let's see how I go.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
In this blog, I have from time to time talked about <u>copying</u> and also about<u> research</u>. More knowledgeable folks than me can articulate these better than I can...I did do my Masters and wrote piles of pages, but, I'm afraid it was so hard, I'd always find myself nodding off. <br />
The gist of my thinking today is, that the two subjects are heavily linked together, for better or worse.<br />
<br />
Firstly, let's think about research, and what that really means in terms of the creative person. To me, it's about finding out- finding out about the "thing". Which usually means some reading, from a book, from a library or through an online purchase, which is happily delivered to my door. I rarely look to a Youtube tutorial as a first port of call, and, I'll talk about that in a tick*.<br />
The next part of research is, trying things out either by drawing or making the "thing". Not just once. Over and over, this is where process and practise come into play. Also, this is where discovery and change can happen. This is also where you can become the best at doing the "thing"...therefore creating something with a starting point, and an unknowable end.<br />
<br />
What's the link to copying?<br />
<br />
In art school, and other academic places of learning, PLAGIARISM, is so looked down upon, that the student can be excluded - thrown out. The threat of this is so real, that usually the student is forced into researching their line of study so thoroughly that this will not be a reality for them.<br />
<br />
So, coming back to today, and the overwhelming event of social media and the outrageous trawled picture collecting sites...For folks who have not had the benefit of academic training, how or why would they even know or bother pursuing the model that I just described?<br />
In a time where just about anything is available to -kind of learn- for free, why would any of it seem valuable or precious? When ideas are flung about (as everybody wants to be noticed) freely why would a 'new comer' even know they are copying? When they say they have been "inspired" by someones work, what are they really saying?<br />
The newbie cannot be expected to be able to differentiate between a tutorial, for free, and an achievable finished object made by an artist or designer. If well regarded and fashionable makers do it, how is the newbie to know any better?<br />
While I'm writing this, the last thing I want to do is to discourage anyone from being creative and expressing themselves. Mostly, I guess, one should be wary of starting that new online business, playing with the big girls and banging on about your "inspiration" and originality...if you haven't done your homework. There is always someone who's been around longer than you have. Read more books, done more travel etc.<br />
<br />
<br />
The solution?<br />
<br />
Hopefully, I haven't lost you.<br />
Find your own path. Find a real life expert. Find a book written by an expert. Email people, have real conversations. Work out of a journal, DRAW, record thoughts, names, things to look up later. Enrol in an art course. Learn from every single person who wants to teach you. Look out of your specific medium for inspiration....build a background of research for yourself, so you can stand proud, and completely know that what you are doing is your own.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
*Youtube tutorials will show you how to do the "thing" they are demonstrating...so you'll be able to do that...handy for learning how to cast on stitches in a fancy way for knitting...not so great for 'ideas'.<br />

Unexpectedly, our little son was diagnosed with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabetes_mellitus_type_1" target="_blank">Type 1 Diabetes</a>, and has really turned everything upsy down town (as our kids say). So now the life I thought we were going to have has been changed a bit, actually quite a lot. We've been told how he will be able to do everything as always, but I don't really buy it. Me, or some other adult will have to swoop in pretty regularly for the next couple of years (at least) and test his blood glucose, give him jabs...not eat too much...not go berserk at parties....not sneek biscuits...and at the other end of the scale, not try and run around oval as many times as possible, play and play in the pool for hours...what I'm getting at it's not a carefree childhood any more. I'd be really happy to here of anyone who can honestly tell me otherwise.<br />
So as you can tell, it's taken the wheels off my momentum a wee bit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik9cVOAsswx4d40O-rXb0DRKJZLTq77j1n0a5OG7QG1bj0tfWjrNX6o6OVewnZsKVGq8cEsIegKQe0fVFxUPqxWGsXJCk00auW3jgBdSQUknxCqwhRUUOC2ZXpwcfWUjSaGe6R2Q/s1600/2014-07-26+00-50-27_0001small.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik9cVOAsswx4d40O-rXb0DRKJZLTq77j1n0a5OG7QG1bj0tfWjrNX6o6OVewnZsKVGq8cEsIegKQe0fVFxUPqxWGsXJCk00auW3jgBdSQUknxCqwhRUUOC2ZXpwcfWUjSaGe6R2Q/s1600/2014-07-26+00-50-27_0001small.jpg" height="200" width="116" /></a></div>
<br />
On the more positive side, he is really well now and his zoom is amazing. We got our boy back. We didn't even know he was going...the T1D crept up very slowly.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Hey, and have a look at this<br />

Firstly many apologies for not updating weeks ago. Now I have the studio, I am always in there when I have time...so less noodling about on the internet, which, is a very good thing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I finally finished the big tapestry I started months ago, all my <a href="http://instagram.com/rachelhineartist" target="_blank">instagram</a> followers are probably sick to death of seeing updates, but it was quite an achievement for me, mainly because it's the biggest thing I've woven since uni.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtqpF_dnIsrgbnxHBzeXxT9YjyaeGy6k7boK4bPXXAtVQaa7wP5qHKTGg5P0CyfOVJELsYS1oWbBfxzf1uVfgC_KNJRTtT-G41m5a6ZB1dWQ7XgpDWyqxaWvYzlC1O-X72wFqPpw/s1600/2014-07-07+03-23-44_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtqpF_dnIsrgbnxHBzeXxT9YjyaeGy6k7boK4bPXXAtVQaa7wP5qHKTGg5P0CyfOVJELsYS1oWbBfxzf1uVfgC_KNJRTtT-G41m5a6ZB1dWQ7XgpDWyqxaWvYzlC1O-X72wFqPpw/s1600/2014-07-07+03-23-44_0005.JPG" height="400" width="371" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The tapestry is still on the loom, and that's why it looks a little bit skewd, it's actually pretty straight on the sides.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW1Bdh5JNTf2APCBNBBcrYEfy5tIWV_G39R56nYEI9boYI0qhaUjOf2vdn_OEOAcCUiDP0mg2kIIygulgjSa5PIMFnS_Fnspd_Xn51YZyH7CpIO6RkZ6he8GwfVIb5R23oUwi3ig/s1600/2014-07-07+03-23-24_0004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjW1Bdh5JNTf2APCBNBBcrYEfy5tIWV_G39R56nYEI9boYI0qhaUjOf2vdn_OEOAcCUiDP0mg2kIIygulgjSa5PIMFnS_Fnspd_Xn51YZyH7CpIO6RkZ6he8GwfVIb5R23oUwi3ig/s1600/2014-07-07+03-23-24_0004.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The studio is starting to look really lived in, which is great for me. I don't seem to get comfy unless there is a bit of muddle about.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been trying out a lot of different ways of doing things. It started back when I started putting the warp on differently. That's why the big octopus tapestry is still on the loom...got loads of warp left.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The studio is part of a converted wool factory...so coincidental.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I just have to say so many thanks to the kind folk on Instagram for all the nice comments and all.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I know from time to time I have been very vocal about my concerns about tapestry as a medium, and especially at the moment, when it's so popular as an activity...rather than an expressive, narrative artform, (as I see it).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
If anyone is interested in what those concerns may be, please feel free to email me and I'll tell you all about them!! : D </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I guess because of these concerns, I had set myself the task of compiling my "how to" notes from uni, and making them into a little book (75pages!?!). This plan was going great until I got that dumb bug (cough, temperature, headaches...Blah) a couple of months ago. The plan is still on, but later now, because of all the lead up till Christmas. So, for anyone who's hanging out for it, it's coming.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
PS: (Because of the Troll who went berserk at me, I do not air these concerns anymore...I can tell you right now, Texan teacher, I'm glad you don't teach my children! At least I speak it how I think it, and not veil my ideas behind a wall of chic, retro, nicey nice speak...while secretly leaving negative, uninformed opinions on people's personal blogs.) </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It feels good to get that off my chest...I've been seathing about that for months.<br />
That's it, no more bitching about that. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I think I was put off blogging for a while because of the TROLL who went kind of passive aggresive berserk at me. I know who it is, and really, the young lady should have known better...perhaps had a little look at the blog before telling me I can't express what I think.<br />
Oh, and if you can't beat 'em.<br />

So, it's up and running.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will still be making posts here, I thought about starting a new blog, and just thought it was way easier to keep plugging away here. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is like the cupboard that has too much stuff in it, that you have to hold everything while you quickly close the door...a bit messy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.rachel-hine.com/" target="_blank">The web site is all tidy.</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I thought it might be useful to make a page here about the care and maintenance of woven artworks, wall hangings and other textile objects for the wall. I'll be working on that this morning.</div>

Hello, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have good news! Pretty soon I will have my own website.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's been a bit of work, but, you know it's about time I grew up, and out of my old friend, this blog.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2SjnWe8eLAEeS60MUTnc3cOWOxv_iOuax8Jqz5RdCRCVXm1jrv5Lqd7YAkBBOMNuxLKF5k-QGWpFOSuWlHATKc0kr55e5Z5baEix1DYoSaA0kqf0wJuloaGH89wk9O91E9eCrrQ/s1600/IMGP5552.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2SjnWe8eLAEeS60MUTnc3cOWOxv_iOuax8Jqz5RdCRCVXm1jrv5Lqd7YAkBBOMNuxLKF5k-QGWpFOSuWlHATKc0kr55e5Z5baEix1DYoSaA0kqf0wJuloaGH89wk9O91E9eCrrQ/s1600/IMGP5552.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is new.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Having a lot of good results from spinning my own wool, and dyeing it too.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Had a go with<a href="http://kraftkolour.com.au/Landscapes_Dyes.php" target="_blank"> Landscape dyes</a> , very effective.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Also, over Summer, I managed to raise some Woad...yep.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now I'm trying to get it to turn it into dye too.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The grey in the face above is some wool I spun.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Remember the tutorial I did on that warping method...it was new to me, anyway. Well, I've been weaving on it and here's where it's at.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYBVN2HMTt4pYi6GgJcGyRsoHVfJ8uQeoLkYOXmwfZxu5jCMMM_B3Lmhf7ynT9XxGYv-SHLEEQgfcBMcVehIBtGhwV6io0oH-5Sbnht5y9EdQzxXgxTRQD8d8OIi_1oAIz9fKt4w/s1600/IMGP5489.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYBVN2HMTt4pYi6GgJcGyRsoHVfJ8uQeoLkYOXmwfZxu5jCMMM_B3Lmhf7ynT9XxGYv-SHLEEQgfcBMcVehIBtGhwV6io0oH-5Sbnht5y9EdQzxXgxTRQD8d8OIi_1oAIz9fKt4w/s1600/IMGP5489.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Firstly, I ended up putting leashes on, it really is way easier and quicker. When you're doing something as time consuming as this, you really need as much help as possible to get it done quicker...I'm not patient, at all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYkRzE3zXrgVACpk0x3in9fmJFe9sqgkqA4q0XxVayPsOjXZMFVCGuGxfxUNDOO-G0JalXiqvSKsuSOpDpqmBg-thOUUlUCrZeG0Szt4LRIxa166K-K5qUc4rTTrpj9lP6uJfI5Q/s1600/IMGP5490.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYkRzE3zXrgVACpk0x3in9fmJFe9sqgkqA4q0XxVayPsOjXZMFVCGuGxfxUNDOO-G0JalXiqvSKsuSOpDpqmBg-thOUUlUCrZeG0Szt4LRIxa166K-K5qUc4rTTrpj9lP6uJfI5Q/s1600/IMGP5490.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
This is where I'm at with this tapestry. I have a little piece of tissue over the face of the tapestry to protect it from dust, and to stop the bobbins brushing the surface. Too much rubbing, touching, will cause the surface to become fluffy, and possibly get a felty appearance...yuck<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj957I3PU0eSMHEtQfYu0SlniiQ6Mj7QJdCufUnhLxHD7_63NnDkBI3QDLnzWf1buJ1n89HGkZH03iaF8oHCEdfB2ACvCfBrzN1uLpmJCr-DIB9zRC0772ZhnVFYKTxrFBW2S_bsA/s1600/IMGP5491.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj957I3PU0eSMHEtQfYu0SlniiQ6Mj7QJdCufUnhLxHD7_63NnDkBI3QDLnzWf1buJ1n89HGkZH03iaF8oHCEdfB2ACvCfBrzN1uLpmJCr-DIB9zRC0772ZhnVFYKTxrFBW2S_bsA/s1600/IMGP5491.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the work without the tissue.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwCwZEh3ATXbVrX73G8nfpz38I1L72Ukhta1gu6R4p5kz1orhpov5MksqrigN_vdPrFJXbF5fZDVtdXoDosDlsCXzmzMuncdoNSvpQnVu7zfR1JFt4UD8PofzfE40OjVbKUN895A/s1600/IMGP5492.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwCwZEh3ATXbVrX73G8nfpz38I1L72Ukhta1gu6R4p5kz1orhpov5MksqrigN_vdPrFJXbF5fZDVtdXoDosDlsCXzmzMuncdoNSvpQnVu7zfR1JFt4UD8PofzfE40OjVbKUN895A/s1600/IMGP5492.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From the back. I have been able to loosen the tension on the loom and push the tapestry to the back. It turns out, I have enough warp to weave something else on top! Not as big, but still, hardly any waste.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9D6SUsRtS2uHXzw8Vcug7o7oiDm8pLyW_uyI7bFdDNwkm2TbwxNFFnIqWvloEWEkuuYtj2OhzhPZJSXWOyGKmABEs2N2U1pBNDjJdfPOlXmnbh7GDx-XdNGB0muDGBdVvL_Mo8w/s1600/IMGP5493.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9D6SUsRtS2uHXzw8Vcug7o7oiDm8pLyW_uyI7bFdDNwkm2TbwxNFFnIqWvloEWEkuuYtj2OhzhPZJSXWOyGKmABEs2N2U1pBNDjJdfPOlXmnbh7GDx-XdNGB0muDGBdVvL_Mo8w/s1600/IMGP5493.JPG" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here you can see all the space at the top.I've only got a little bit to go.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, it works really well, this method of warping. And I definitely think I'll do it again .</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cheers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Painting...I found some old inks I $aved up for in about 1989, they're still good....I was doing Tafe at the Gordon...and about 17 years old. Oh, this is a picture of some common frogs, in a very uncommon setting.<br />

Inspired by a photo I saw on my FB feed, from<a href="http://crfashionbook.com/post/62253044993/gareth-pugh" target="_blank"> CR magazine, Gareth Pugh,</a> I wove this. The 'wild' and hairy nature of the original photo, and the rya knotting in this piece go together, I think. This piece is really little 7 x 10 cms. I wove it using the "stick" method, that I did the tutorial about...I'll probably show it using the tiny frame I wove it on.<br />

This is a new idea I'm working on, and this is the first. Limited editions of my drawings, painted...in effect, little, original paintings, but in series, if that makes sense. This is number 1 of probably 5 or 6. More pieces will be added as I get to them. So much fun to do. I will make a bit of a big thing about it, when my Bigcartel shop is ready.<br />
Looking forward to 2014...!rachelhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04008467590441962115noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30863424.post-71346515712080966582013-12-04T12:57:00.001+11:002013-12-04T12:57:08.726+11:00My one and only TUTORIAL***** Warping*******The other day, while I was reading this <a href="http://www.amazon.ca/Technique-Woven-Tapestry-Tadek-Beutlich/dp/0823053008" target="_blank">book </a>, I saw another way of puting on a warp. I know about a rolling warp, and to be honest I always felt like there was a hell of a lot of tension on all the parts of the loom and the modifications didn't really work for me. I know others have no problem with it, it's not for me.<br />
This method, that I will attempt to explain, this time with photos, unlike the disaster which is my Tapestry "yap" page of FB (you can find <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/216645371838195/" target="_blank">here</a>) It seemed most people were scratching their heads...Anyhoo, here goes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Please keep in mind, I am not at all TECHNICAL....this is huge for me to even investigate this stuff.<br />
<br />
* Also, what I am showing is the first time I have done this...I made a few mistakes, and fixed them...read it through before you attempt to do this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2kdxutrkfUc-EjmbGOnlzeCeGPtyk9aMqb6Jwb5_lKkTs7bOEvrtXT5fWAcxfRI4RuBzDnJBD4xEiHge6jB_Zkntj7EQ-qxEh-oPRgGRCsQp1hEB2EjMpawevvwmEVDdrnwOLDA/s1600/IMGP5340.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2kdxutrkfUc-EjmbGOnlzeCeGPtyk9aMqb6Jwb5_lKkTs7bOEvrtXT5fWAcxfRI4RuBzDnJBD4xEiHge6jB_Zkntj7EQ-qxEh-oPRgGRCsQp1hEB2EjMpawevvwmEVDdrnwOLDA/s640/IMGP5340.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
This is what we are trying to achieve...(not the vertical foot loom...ignore that)<br />
I'm not exactly sure what this method is called, but what this method will allow for,<br />
is this:<br />
1. to be able to use almost twice as much of the warp.<br />
2. Much less wastage.<br />
3. Portability, (you could transport weaving from home to Uni, without having to take the whole loom.)<br />
4. Making more out of the equipment you have availabe to you.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
First you will need</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmBAc9zrqE0iJqQZER3-5B8evTza60oN3rvZohn3tlRqG1sJhJjod3Bm04dvlTfsQR7g7BSwb62HeEZz-gsgbq6GjjG16PuOlM6BYJrs4ZNY4MjXz0KWXQbXRrsvceQrm5x8ht-w/s1600/IMGP5341.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmBAc9zrqE0iJqQZER3-5B8evTza60oN3rvZohn3tlRqG1sJhJjod3Bm04dvlTfsQR7g7BSwb62HeEZz-gsgbq6GjjG16PuOlM6BYJrs4ZNY4MjXz0KWXQbXRrsvceQrm5x8ht-w/s640/IMGP5341.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A<span style="font-size: large;"> loom,</span> frame. This one has tension adjusters at the side, I see no reason why you couldn't use a frame without tension adjusters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Seine twine, or what ever<span style="font-size: large;"> warp thread</span> you use.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgumKzqqJDF_Bcnpk9EzRF42LQtdnGg4jRVWDxe6hbxOidwWr8gqM9AdHG-z0Yj2P02gu3xqs8Eokxf9Zvnvm1yxWZQTKG4J0bSPVZF4Ji9bNIF5wFD-tBzB7yBo58tl4EcUnd2Kg/s1600/IMGP5343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgumKzqqJDF_Bcnpk9EzRF42LQtdnGg4jRVWDxe6hbxOidwWr8gqM9AdHG-z0Yj2P02gu3xqs8Eokxf9Zvnvm1yxWZQTKG4J0bSPVZF4Ji9bNIF5wFD-tBzB7yBo58tl4EcUnd2Kg/s640/IMGP5343.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Some dowel <span style="font-size: large;">rods,</span> cut to the width of your loom</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
PaddlePop (popsical) sticks </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
1.First, you should have your artwork, measure it. Theoretically, it could be at least the height of the loom. For example, my loom is 34" or about 86cm. My artwork, that I intend to weave is 28" or 72cm high.<br />
Normally, if you were to put on a warp by just wraping it around and around, you could only comfortably weave about half the space inside the loom -eg-15" or 40ish cms.<br />
<br />
2. Make a generous estimate of the length of warp you will need, remember you need to tie knots and have enough space to weave. For the sake of this experiment I measured all the way around, just so I knew I would have enough..<br />
<br />
3. I put the pieces of measured warp on like this.<br />

4. Next, you have to connect the warp to the other rod...this is my first mistake...what was I thinking? This is not very weaver-ly...this knot eventually has to go.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI0vVp9PnV20fKPFDvVd-lx-b1j-ARbqU-AAwiEYXuQq-MM6wRrfSq1AEq_LlHCfp2h12SdFK1xLMrTF69CvebYIQPZsxNgotjP_VVX7zzBMiiqv9-D1c7mQF8m950z4EJRZGLUw/s1600/IMGP5348.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgI0vVp9PnV20fKPFDvVd-lx-b1j-ARbqU-AAwiEYXuQq-MM6wRrfSq1AEq_LlHCfp2h12SdFK1xLMrTF69CvebYIQPZsxNgotjP_VVX7zzBMiiqv9-D1c7mQF8m950z4EJRZGLUw/s640/IMGP5348.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
5. Here you can see, all the warps are now connected to the rod, and I'm about to bring it up, and tie it to the other rod.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I worked evenly over the warp, I think I ended up tying about seven loops</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj694BuJEPLm0fuDUF8noX_XPRl1AA4YLB4-8A5DKOTftSJw_920s15hwY_gjAtXoyANeqkSSNZlV63nGCvA8f5VE9GruZVJMdzXhdZIVGT5Zp_FRBJyoPXUMpkAOl2LhAHGNp8Bw/s1600/IMGP5353.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj694BuJEPLm0fuDUF8noX_XPRl1AA4YLB4-8A5DKOTftSJw_920s15hwY_gjAtXoyANeqkSSNZlV63nGCvA8f5VE9GruZVJMdzXhdZIVGT5Zp_FRBJyoPXUMpkAOl2LhAHGNp8Bw/s640/IMGP5353.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
7.To create tension on the warps insert the sticks, and twist...See the first photo to help explain.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I do this again, I would make my warp a little shorter and the loops connecting the rods a little smaller too, to take full advantage of using this method of tensioning the warp.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I had to make up the difference using the tension device on the loom.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifW9OOcr8RuhbSBfOZ2ANOEKyRtZZIsq-oJK1qeF-Utlk2diDpFNxtZ3avsVvd4VJSEaVnCHhIP6cDQredUHlz0LhCKRyNGmrffzuXVpThXsFvQIYz7OxjZ8mG0svJ7DWS5gUqFg/s1600/IMGP5350.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifW9OOcr8RuhbSBfOZ2ANOEKyRtZZIsq-oJK1qeF-Utlk2diDpFNxtZ3avsVvd4VJSEaVnCHhIP6cDQredUHlz0LhCKRyNGmrffzuXVpThXsFvQIYz7OxjZ8mG0svJ7DWS5gUqFg/s640/IMGP5350.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now to re-tying the warp, in a much more weaver-y way.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLIAQx3gqT4kn5SUbP_IZzEcY-RVquoNi4zJ3Lk_hjqUGclBVfoKbM4hol5KnutaXskBiyjCpswuPlGVhMk_0ReNon9YMpXwEFDsQYAVpsWgfQXZMmkf_ehRtjE-98cFv4YqMdBQ/s1600/IMGP5356.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLIAQx3gqT4kn5SUbP_IZzEcY-RVquoNi4zJ3Lk_hjqUGclBVfoKbM4hol5KnutaXskBiyjCpswuPlGVhMk_0ReNon9YMpXwEFDsQYAVpsWgfQXZMmkf_ehRtjE-98cFv4YqMdBQ/s640/IMGP5356.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwKsNKckqGnM30dSBuO5d-9cCkbnFqk-gyqirDLeCCnbqMqCeMIqacAd-mvaSWUTkXx8yWAbVdmXKRtbvxLdmuqlfUCZPnNxil-PdbIfPftTulElXOLTJkkKf4dI6dLgaYbiroSA/s1600/IMGP5357.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwKsNKckqGnM30dSBuO5d-9cCkbnFqk-gyqirDLeCCnbqMqCeMIqacAd-mvaSWUTkXx8yWAbVdmXKRtbvxLdmuqlfUCZPnNxil-PdbIfPftTulElXOLTJkkKf4dI6dLgaYbiroSA/s640/IMGP5357.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With the point of my bobbin, I undid all the stupid knots I did to begin with, and replaced them with these. kind of a reef type knot, that starts at the back, and finishes up on the front of the warps. So much better, and firmer. All the warps have a similar amount of tension...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif9cYzCC-lUrYGMcil6fRrT9KfM0TSN0X0cf-LrFaMIUpttFZl5xDpENipWATWlvwpuVrU2R0T8_VIyl5F1Q9qYJbsUd42KimlZEKuMC-F7jKX9l28EmrnZYHh5Vl5wVT05Hg2Wg/s1600/IMGP5358.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif9cYzCC-lUrYGMcil6fRrT9KfM0TSN0X0cf-LrFaMIUpttFZl5xDpENipWATWlvwpuVrU2R0T8_VIyl5F1Q9qYJbsUd42KimlZEKuMC-F7jKX9l28EmrnZYHh5Vl5wVT05Hg2Wg/s640/IMGP5358.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
8.Now that all the warps have been re-tied, loosen the tension a little bit, and push the rods to the bottom of the loom, like this picture above.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUbTnyoAgpKeYy9nixz-kIcQ03-HAUc2sWdG1vD_dNsnQgihutQnIaqzbaFamgoptSOkAGPUCJshuQnsCtk2Q0PCxzNMZbZJiNefy30QRerSlXczncSAkvI4gs2gqkMezUAc3IRQ/s1600/IMGP5359.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUbTnyoAgpKeYy9nixz-kIcQ03-HAUc2sWdG1vD_dNsnQgihutQnIaqzbaFamgoptSOkAGPUCJshuQnsCtk2Q0PCxzNMZbZJiNefy30QRerSlXczncSAkvI4gs2gqkMezUAc3IRQ/s640/IMGP5359.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
9. I have put in the "floor", and begun to weave the "bed". I'm just weaving on the warps on the front surface.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I haven't put in a shed, mainly because I intend to weave over a different amount warp at a time, and I find a shed a bit anoying when I'm doing that. Also if you like to weave with leashes, you can put them on as normal too.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hope this has been a little bit interesting, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I will keep my reader posted as I eventually get to work on this...I have something else on another loom at the moment. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Cheers</div>

I'm making work about the 'wild person', the one who works alone, in isolation, disconnected to an estblished social community. One who draws upon nature and elements to do with that state of being.<br />
One who is close to their emotional surface.<br />
The work is starting to look very fashion-y, that's ok with me. I use reference from fashion magazines, but I like the pictures that sometimes make the models look a bit off.<br />

Not wanting to flog a dead horse or anything...but (Re: Kate Derum Award) my artist's statement was edited ...quite a bit, and I thought I might have come off sounding kind of mean or un-loving about my dear children, who I love a lot.<br />
So here it is in it's entirety <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
So, this week, I've been plodding through this tapestry...it's really hard. I'm determined to make this look really interesting. You can see my exploration into "weaving" the weaving, now that's been a thing. Getting back to last week's post, and question...Can you go too far? Well maybe? At this stage, I'm pretty happy. Maybe going too far gets you to a really rad place?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Speaking of rad things...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To old students of Kate's, this here book may look familiar. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I picked it up at our <a href="http://www.barwonbooksellers.com.au/" target="_blank">local book shop</a> for a steal about 6 months ago. I always thought everything in this book was just over the top, crazy old school...now as time has marched on, something has settled in my head, and now I get it, and also I can see why Kate liked it too.</div>

I guess I'm interested in the way to simplify the way I mix colours, making mixy blends to get every transition of colour, might not always be the best way to get a strong finished piece of work. Because my work is very fine, and looks very fiddlie, the last thing I want to do is weaken the whole thing, by going too far...can you go too far?<br />
When I have a few more pieces under my belt, I will start to explain where all this is going, I'm a bit tentative at the moment, because it's just talking in the air. I hope I will be taking you to an exciting and strange place. <br />

I love this tapestry so much, and I was very happy when it won the prize for the</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Irene Davies Emerging Artist Award.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I like this tapestry because it embraces new(ish) technologies, of I think, laser or ink jet printing onto a beautifully woven surface. How exciting to see something utterly contemporary in a tapestry show.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Anton Veenstra won the main award with his tapestry <i>Everyman clown</i>. </div>

And how fabulous to meet this lovely artist <a href="http://rachelscabinet.blogspot.com.au/" target="_blank">Kyoko</a> Imazu! She is currently doing a residency at the <a href="http://www.austapestry.com.au/" target="_blank">Australian Tapestry Workshop</a>. Learning to weave too! She is a very good artist, and you can see her work from the link.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There was a lot of build up for me, just getting around to doing my work, now, I just have to get on with making more work...work work</div>
