1994ish

"hello"
"Hi, it's Kate Derum from Monash University, I'm calling about your interviews"
"Oh, ok"
"Are you going to come to the tapestry interview?"
"I don't know, I don't even know what tapestry is?"
"What do you think it is?"
"Brown lumpy wall hangings?"
"Well, I think you should come to the interview, I think you'll find it can be quite a refined way to make imagery."
"Ok, I'll see you at the interview"

And that was the way I first met Kate Derum. And it was the start of my development as an artist. She was extremely supportive of me, and patient, because I was very nutty from time to time while I was at Uni. I absolutely cannot say how important she was to me, or how sad I am that she is not here anymore.
I'll miss her very much.

I think we all have a bit of a strange, how we came to the tapestry gig Rach, your entry is beautiful and I know I'll miss her input and sense of dry humour as well.

I love hearing that story. How else would any of us have arrived in this wonderful world of weaving if not for Kate.
It hasn't quite sunk in for me yet, I can't quite process that someone can be there one moment, then gone?
